Thispapercomprehensivelyinvestigatesthepropertiesofselfphasemodulationbasedopticaldelaysystemsconsistingofdispersioncompensationfibreandhighlynonlinearfibres.Itresearchesintotheimpactsofpowerlevellaunchedintohighlynonlinearfibres,conversionwavelength,dispersionslope,modulationformatandopticalfilterbandwidthontheoverallperformanceofopticaldelaysystems.Theresultsrevealthat,ifthepowerlaunchedintohighlynonlinearfibresisfixed,thetimedelaygenerallyvarieslinearlywiththeconversionwavelength,butjumpsintermittentlyatsomeconversionwavelengths.However,thetimedelayvariessemi-periodicallywiththepowerlaunchedintohighlynonlinearfibres.Thedispersionslopeofhighlynonlinearfibreshassignificantinfluenceonthetimedelay,especiallyforthenegativedispersionslope.Thetimedelaydifferswithmodulationformatsduetothedifferentcombinedinteractionofnonlinearityanddispersioninfibres.Thebandwidthoftheopticalfiltersalsogreatlyaffectsthetimedelaybecauseitdeterminesthebandwidthofthepassedsignalintheselfphasemodulationbasedtimedelaysystems.Theoutputsignalqualityoftheoveralltimedelaysystemsdependsontheconversionwavelengthandinputpowerlevel.Theoptimisationofthepowerlevelandconversionwavelengthtoprovidethebestoutputsignalqualityismadeattheendofthispaper.
