Stomatalcharacteristicsanditsplasticityweresurveyedinleavesoffourcanopyspecies,Shoreachinensis,Pometiatomentosa,Anthocephaluschinensis,Calophyllunpolyanthumandthreemiddle-layerspecies,Barringtoniapendula,Garciniahanburyi,Horsfieldiatetratepala,acclimatedtodifferentlightconditionsformorethanoneyear.Allplant'sstomataaredistributedontheabaxialofleaves.PometiatomentosaandBarringtoniapendulahavehigherstomataldensityandtheguardcelllengthofAnthocephaluschinensisandCalophyllunpolyanthumweremuchgreaterthanothers'.Stomataldensityandstomatalindex(ratioofstomatalnumberstoepidermalcellnumber)wereincreasedwithgrowthirradianceincreased,whilenumbersofstomataperleafwerehigherinthelowthanthehighrelativePFD,andstomatalconductanceofleaveswasthehighestinthe50%offulllightexceptforAnthocephaluschinensis.TherelativePFDhaslittleeffectsontheguardcelllengthofallsevenplants.Wehavealsofoundasignificantnegativecorrelationbetweenstomataldensityandleafarea,butthestomatalconductancewasnotsignificantlypositivewiththestomatalconductance.Theanalysisofphenotypicplasticityofstomatalcharacteristicsshowed:plasticityindexforstomatalindexandnumbersofstomatalperleafweresimilarforcanopyandmiddle-layerspecies,whiletheplasticityindexofstomataldensityandstomatalconductanceweresignificantlygreaterforcanopyspeciesthanmiddle-layerspecies.Thehighplasticityofcanopyspecieswasconsistentwiththehypothesisthatspecializationinamorefavorableenvironmentincreasesplasticity.
