Tostudythecompactionlawandoverpressureevolutionindeepwatershallowsediments,alarge-straincompactionmodelthatconsidersmaterialnonlinearityandmovingboundaryisformulated.Themodelconsidersthedependenceofpermeabilityandmaterialpropertiesonvoidratio.ThemodifiedCam-Claymodelisselectedastheconstitutiverelationsofthesediments,andthedeactivation/reactivationmethodisusedtocapturethemovingtopsurfaceduringthedepositionprocess.Aone-dimensionalmodelisusedtostudythecompactionlawoftheshallowsediments.Resultsshowthatthesettlementoftheshallowsedimentsislargeundertheirownweightduringcompaction.Thevoidratiodecreasesstrictlywithburialdepthanddecreasesmorequicklyneartheseafloorthaninthedeeperlayers.Thegenerationofabnormalpressureintheshallowflowsandsiscloselyrelatedtothecompactionlawofshallowsediments.Thetwomainfactorsthataffectthegenerationofoverpressureinthesandsaredepositionrateandpermeabilityofoverlyingclaysediments.Overpressureincreaseswithanincreaseindepositionrateandadecreaseinthepermeabilityoftheoverlyingclaysediment.Moreover,anupperlimitfortheoverpressureexists.Atwo-dimensionalmodelisusedtostudythedifferentialcompactionoftheshallowsediments.Theporepressurewillstillincreaseduetotheinflowoftheporefluidfromtheneighboringclaysedimenteventhoughthedepositionprocessisinterrupted.
