ACanadiandoctor,WilliamNaismith,inventedthegameofbasketballinJanuary1892,toprovideanindoorwintersportfortheYMCAinSpringfield,Massachusetts.Hewrotebasicrulesandnaileduptwopeachbasketsateitherendofalargeroom.Ofhisoriginal13rules,ninehavebeenkeptbutchangedsomewhat.Sincebasketballusedsofewplayers,YMCAmemberswereupsetthatmoremencouldnotusethegymtogether.Teamsstartedthinkingofrentingtheirownhalls.Thisledtotheprofessionalteams.
