ThegameofbaseballissaidtohavebeenbasedonanEnglishgamecalledroundball.AlexanderCartwrightwrotethefirstrulesinSeptember1845.In1846,thefirstgamewasplayedbetweentheKnickerbockersofNewYorkCityandtheNewYorkBaseBallClub.Originally,baseballwasplayedmainlybyimmigrants.In1858,thefirstamateurassociationofbaseballplayerswasformed.ItwascalledtheNationalAssociationofBaseballPlayers.DuringtheCivilWarsoldierstaughtbaseball,alloverthecountry.In1869,thefirstplayerswerepaid.TheybelongedtoateamcalledtheCincinnatiRedStockings.GeorgeWrightwasthehighestpaidplayerandearned$1400fortheseason.
