Usingfirst-principlescalculations,thecontactbetweenthescandium(Sc)andsemiconductingcarbonnanotube(CNT)isinvestigated.Thisisoneofthebestqualityofn-typecontacts.Twojunctionmodelswith(8,0)CNTonlow-indexScsurfacesareconstructedtoelucidatethestructuralandelectronicpropertiesofSc/CNTjunctions.AnalysesbasedondensityofstatesandchargedifferencerevealthatstrongchemicalbondsareformedbetweenScandCatomsduetohybridstatesofSc3dstateandC2πstate.WithrespecttoTi(0001)/CNTjunction,wefindthedipolelayerformedattheinterfaceofSc(0001)/CNTiscomparablewiththatofTi(0001)/CNTbutgivesanegativebarrierattheinterface.ThisindicatesthattheexcellentcontactpropertiesofScmetalelectrodearecausedbyitslowworkfunctionandexcellentbindingwithCNT.
