AheavyrainfalleventthatoccurredinShandongProvincein26-28August2004wascausedmainlybyTyphoonAereandcoldairactivitiesrelatedtoawesterlytrough.Theeventwastriggeredbyaninvertedtyphoontrough,whichwascloselyassociatedwiththeintensificationofthelow-levelsoutheasterlyflowandthenorthwardtransportofheatandmomentumintheperipheryofthetyphoonlow.AnumericalsimulationofthiseventisperformedusingthenonhydrostaticmesoscalemodelMM5withtwo-wayinteractiveandtriply-nestedgrids,andthestructureoftheinvertedtyphoontroughisstudied.Furthermore,theformationanddevelopmentmechanismoftheinvertedtyphoontroughandamesoscalevortexarediscussedthroughavorticitybudgetanalysis.Theresultsshowthattheheavyrainfallwasinducedbythestrongconvergencebetweenthestrongandweakwindswithintheinvertedtyphoontrough.Dynamiceffectsofthelow-leveljetandthediabaticheatingofprecipitationplayedanimportantroleinthedevelopmentoftheinvertedtyphoontroughandtheformationofthemesoscalevortex.Thevorticitybudgetanalysissuggeststhatthedivergenceterminthelowtroposphere,thehorizontaladvectionterm,andtheconvectionterminthemiddletroposphereweremaincontributorstopositivevorticity.Nonetheless,atthesamepressurelevel,theeffectofthedivergencetermandthatoftheadvectiontermwereoppositetoeachother.Inthemiddletroposphere,theverticaltransporttermmadeapositivecontributionwhilethetiltingtermmadeanegativecontribution,andthetotalvorticitytendencywasthenetresultoftheircounteractions.Itisfoundthatthechangetendencyoftherelativevorticitywasnotuniformhorizontally.Astrongpositivevorticitytendencyoccurredinthesoutheastofthemesoscalevortex,whichiswhytheheavyrainfallwasconcentratedthere.Theincreaseofpositivevorticityinthelow(upper)tropospherewascausedbyhorizontalconvergence(upwardtransportofvorticityfrom
