Biogenicstabilizationprocessesthatresultintheformationofbiofilmsandinterparticle-networkscansignificantlyalterthetransportcharacteristicsoffinegrainedsedimentlayers.Theincreaseinthethresholdofsedimentmotioncanamounttouptoseveralhundredpercent.Whileplancticorganismsareinvolvedintheformationofdepositingflocsandtheearlystagesofconsolidation,thesecondaryconsolidationiscontrolledbymicrobialbreakdownprocesses,leadingtochangesinthemechanicalpropertiesofcohesivesediments.Whiletheprimarystageofconsolidationiscompletedindays,thesecondaryprocessescanlastfordecades.Apreliminaryseriesoferosiontestsinanannularflumerevealeddemonstratedthebiogenicimpactintheearlystagesofsedimentformation.Surrogatematerialswereusedtosimulatethegoverningpropertiesofnaturalsoftsediments.
