Inordertoexaminetheeffectivenessofengineeringprotectionagainstlocalizedscourinfrontofthesouthgroin-groupoftheYangtzeEstuaryWaterwayImprovementProject,PhaseI,anundistort-edphysicalmodelonageometricscaleof1:250isbuiltinthisstudy,coveringtwogroinsandtheiradacentestuarineareas.Byuseofrinsingfix-bedmodelaswellaslocalizedmobile-bedmodel,theexperimentisundertakenunderbi-directionalsteadyflow.Accordingtotheexperimentalresults,waterwaydredgingleadstotheincreaseinsteramvelocity,theincreasebeinglargerduringtheebbthanduringtheflood.Con-structionoftheupstreamgroinhassomeinfluenceontheflowpatternsnearthedownstreamgroin.Local-izedscourinfrontofthegroin-headsiscontrolledmainlybyebbflow.Inthecaseofariverbedcomposedentirelyofsilt,thedepthsoflocalizedscourinfrontofthetwogroin-headsare27mand29m,respectively.Inreality,theunderneathsedimentoftheprototyperiverbedisclaywhosethresholdve
