Anewapproachtostudytheevolutioncomplexityofcellularautomataisproposedandexplainedthoroughlybyanexampleofelementarycellularautomatonofrule56.Usingthetoolsofdistinctexcludedblocks,computationalsearchandsymbolicdynamics,themathematicalstructureunderlyingthetimeseriesgeneratedfromtheelementarycellularautomatonofrule56isanalyzedanditscomplexityisdetermined,inwhichtheDycklanguageandCatalannumbersemergenaturally.
