Nigeriaisthemostpopulaousblacknationintheworld.Ithasanareaof913,072squarekilometres.Thecountrypopulationisabout120million.Therearethreemajorlanguages,Hausa,YorubaandIgbo,althoughthereisstillmorethan380dialectsinlocallanguages.TherearelargenumberofhouseholdontheAfricancontinentthatareunelectrified.InNigeriaabout70millionpeopleremainliterallyinthedarkwithoutaccesstoelectricity.Themajorityofthesenumbersareintheruralareas.Thisworkshopisaptinanumberofways.Itisajointeffortbetweengovernment,privatesector,theacademicandotherpractitionersinsmallhydropowerstation,itisalsoapromotionofbusinessandindustrialactivitiesaswellasdevelopmentofrenewableenergyresources.Iwishtocommendtheorganizersofthisworkshop.ThefocusoftheworkshopisrelevanttotheagendaoftheFederalMinistryofPowerandSteelandaspirationsoftheFederalGovernmentofNigeriatoprovideregularandsteadyelectricitytomajorityofNigeriansbeforetheendofyear2001.
