PyriculariaoryzaeanamorphofMagnaportheoryzaeisoneofthemostnotoriousfungalpathogenscausingsevereeconomiclossinriceproductionworldwide.Variousmethods,viz.cultural,biologicalandmolecularapproaches,areutilizedtocounteractthispathogen.Moreover,sometolerantorresistantricevarietieshavebeendevelopedwiththehelpofbreedingprogrammes.Isolationandmolecularcharacterizationofdifferentblastresistancegenesnowopenthegatefornewpossibilitiestoelucidatetheactualallelicvariantsofthesegenesviavariousmolecularbreedingandtransgenicapproaches.However,thebehavioralpatternofthisfungusbreakupstheresistancebarriersintheresistantortolerantricevarieties.Thishost-pathogenbarrierwillbepossiblycounteredinfutureresearchbycomparativegenomicsdatafromavailablegenomesequencedataofriceandM.oryzaefordurableresistance.Presentreviewemphasizedfascinatingrecentupdates,newmolecularbreedingapproaches,transgenicandgenomicsapproaches(i.e.miRNAandgenomeediting)forthemanagementofblastdiseaseinrice.Theupdatedinformationwillbehelpfulforthedurable,resistancebreedingprogrammeinriceagainstblastpathogen.
