Ironoxidesfrom33samplesof25soilsderivedfromvariousparentmaterialsinthesouthernChinawerestudiedusingNaOHselectivedissolutiontechniqueandX-raydiffraction(XRD).GoethitandhematiteweretheonlytwocrystallineFeoxidesocurringinasignificantquantity,Thegoethite/(goethite+hematite)ratiosrangedfrom0to1,beingthehighestinyellowsoil,someyellow-redsoilsandsaprolitesamplesandthelowestinsoilsderivedfrompurplesandstonewhereonlyhematitewaspresent.Alsubstituioningoethiterangedfrom6.6to29.9mol%withameanvalueof16.7mol%,whilesubstitutionofAlinhematiterangedfrom0to12.1mol%,ThevaluesofAlsubsitutionofhematiteincoexistinggoethiteandhematitewerecloselyrelatedwithcorrespondingvaluesofgoetheite(r=0.7292,P<0.01,n=27),Therednessratingofsoilsincreasedlinearlywithincrasingamountofhematite(r=0.8109,P<0.01),Itwassuggestedthatrenessratngcouldbeusedtocrudelyestimatehematitecontentsofsoils.
