IncontrasttopreviousstudiesthathavetendedtofocusontheinfluenceofthetotalArcticsea-icecoverontheEastAsiansummertripolerainfallpattern,thepresentstudyidentifiestheBarentsSeaasthekeyregionwheretheJunesea-icevariabilityexertsthemostsignificantimpactsontheEastAsianAugusttripolerainfallpattern,andexplorestheteleconnectionmechanismsinvolved.TheresultsrevealthatareductioninJuneseaiceexcitesanomalousupwardairmotionduetostrongnear-surfacethermalforcing,whichfurthertriggersameridionalAnomalousdownwardmotionthereforeformsovertheCaspianoverturningwave-likepatternextendingtomidlatitudes.Sea,whichinturninduceszonallyorientedoverturningcirculationalongthesubtropicaljetstream,exhibitingtheeast-westRossbywavetrainknownastheSilkRoadpattern.ItissuggestedthattheBoninhigh,asubtropicalanticyclonepredominantnearSouthKorea,showsasignificantanomalyduetotheeastwardextensionoftheSilkRoadpatterntoEastAsia.AsapossibledescendingbranchoftheHadleycell,theBoninhighanomalyultimatelytriggersameridionaloverturning,establishingthePacific-Japanpattern.ThisinturninducesananomalousanticycloneandcyclonepairoverEastAsia,andatripoleverticalconvectionanomalymeridionallyorientedoverEastAsia.Consequently,atripolerainfallanomalypatternisobservedoverEastAsia.Resultsfromnumericalexperimentsusingversion5oftheCommunityAtmosphereModelsupporttheinterpretationofthischainofevents.
