摘要 Therearesomebasicproblemsinprevioustheoreticalstudiesofbaroclinicinstability.Thederivedcriticalbaroclinitywasconsiderablylowerthanthetimeaveragedmeanmeridionaltemperaturegradient,especiallyinthelowertroposphere.Also,thelinearmechanismofbaroclinicdisturbancedevelopmentwhichisnotedrestrictedbythecriticalbaroclinitywasnotstudiedsufficiently.Therealisticcriticalbaroclinityanddisturbancedevelopmentarediscussedinthisstudy.Itwillbeshownthatthecriticalconditionofinstabilityandtypicaltimeandspacescalesofdisturbancesde-pendonthree-dimensionalstructuresofatmosphereandsphericityoftheearth,otherthanthehorizontaltemperaturegradientalone.Thevariantbehaviourofatmosphericdisturbancesdependshighlyontheirspecificscalesthatmaybedescribedbythesametheoreticalmodel.Thus,therewouldbenosubstantialdifferencesinthebasicinstabilitymecha-nismofmanydisturbancesincludingthepolarlowsandexplosivecyclones.
