Tectonismisofextremeimportancetosequencestratigraphicpatternsincontinentalsedimentarybasins,affectingboththearchitecturesandinternalmakeupofsequences.SequencestratigraphicframeworkofthePaleogenesystemintheFushansag,northernSouthChinaSea,wasbuiltusing3Dand2Dseismicdata,complementedbydrillingcoresandwelllogsdata.Onefirst-order,threesecond-orderandseventhird-ordersequenceswereidentified.Analysisofpaleotectonicstressfield,unconformitiesandsubsidencehistoryshowedthatthePaleogenetectonicevolutionpresentedsignificantcharacteristicsofmultistageandepisode,andcanbedividedintothreestages:riftingstageI(initialriftingperiod),riftingstageII(rapidsubsidenceperiod),riftingstageIII(fault-depresseddiversionaryperiod).Partitionofthewestandeastintectonicactivitywasobvious.Thewestareashowedrelativelystrongertectonicactivitythantheeastarea,especiallyduringtheriftingstageII.Episodicriftingandlateralvariationsintectonicactivityresultedinawidevarietyofstructuralslopebreakbelts,whichcontrolledboththesequencearchitecturesandintervalmakeup,andstronglyconstrainedthedevelopmentofspecialfacieszonesorsandbodiesthattendedtoformhydrocarbonaccumulation.ThispaperclassifiesthegenetictypesofslopebreakbeltsandtheirrelevantsequencestratigraphicpatternswithintheFushansag,andfurtherdiscussesthetectonicevolutioncontrolsonsequencestratigraphicpatterns,whichsuggeststhatverticalevolutionpathsofstructuralslopebreakbeltsandrelevantsequencestratigraphicpatternsasaresponsetothePaleogenetectonicevolutionwerestronglycontrolledbysagmargintypesandlateralvariationsoftectonicactivity.
