Vapordepositedcoatingsontostripsteelareapromisingalternativeasfunctionallayersforcorrosionprotectionorhighabrasionresistance.Conventionalcoatingsystemshavesomelimitsregardingenvironmentalcompatibility,therangeofcoatingmaterialsandapplicationproperties.Physicalvapordeposition(PVD)isanenvironment-friendlytechnologyandenablesnearlyunlimitedmaterialandprocessvariety.Electronbeamhigh-rateevaporationwithdepositionratesuptosomemicrometerspersecondisthemostproductivePVDtechnologyforlowcostcoating.Thecombinationofevaporationwithpowerfulplasmaisanefficientwaytoimprovethelayerproperties.Thedevelopedplasmasourcescanbeusedforspecialplasmaenhancedchemicalvapordeposition(PECVD)processestoo.Thepapergivesanoverviewaboutthelatestdevelopmentsinthesetechnologies.Furthermore,thepaperexplainssomeexamplesofnewlayerstacksontosteelstrips.Whileenhancedcorrosionprotectioncanbeobtainedbymagnesium,aluminiumorcoppercontainingcoatingsotherfunctionalsurfacepropertiescomemoreandmoreinthefocusofinterest.Forinstance,decorativegoldcoloredlayers,transparentscratchresistantlayers,hardcoatingsandphotocatalyticlayersweredepositedonrunningsteelstrips.Functionallayersandlayersystemsforenergysavingandsunenergyabsorptionbysolarthermaleffectsandphotovoltaicsareunderdevelopment.Thecoatingsarepreparedundertheconditionsofveryhighdepositionratesusingourin-linevacuumcoaterformetallicstripsandsheetswiththenameMAXI.Theinfluenceoftheprocessandplasmaparametersonthelayerpropertieswereinvestigatedandwillbedemonstratedforsomeapplications.
