Withdailyprecipitationrecordsat586stationsinChinafor1960-2004,thisstudyinvestigatesthespatio-temporalvariationofthenumberofextremewetdays(NEWD)foreachseasoninChinaanditsrelationshipwithSSTanomaliesandassociatedatmosphericcirculationanomalypatterns,inwhichathresholdofextremeprecipitationforaseasonandastationisdefinedasthevalueofthe90thpercentilewhentheprecipitationrecordsforwetdaysduringtheseasonarerankedinanincreasingorder.ResultsshowthattherearesignificantincreasesoftheNEWDalongtheYangtzeRivervalleyduringwinterandsummer,inNorthChinaduringwinter,inSouthChinaduringspring,inNortheastChinaduringwinterandspring,andinNorthwestChinathroughouttheseasons,whilethereisaremarkabledecreaseinNorthChinaduringsummer.Besidesthelineartrend,theNEWDalsoexhibitsconsiderableinterannualandinterdecadalvariabilities.Aftereliminatingthelineartrend,theNEWDanomaliesshowdistinctseasonalpatterns.TheNEWDanomaliesarecharacterizedbya"dipole"modewithoppositephasesbetweennorthernandsouthernChinainspringandautumn,a"tri-pole"modewithoppositephasesbetweenYangtzeRivervalleyandsouthernandnorthernChinainsummer,anda"monopole"modewiththesamephaseovermostofChinainwinter.TherelationshipoftheNEWDanomaliesinChinawiththeSSTanomaliesinIndianandPacificOceansisfoundtobemainlydependentontheENSO,andassociatedatmosphericcirculationanomalypatternsfortheENSO’simpactontheNEWDinChinaareidentified.
