TheSCOhasbeencloselyfollowingdevelopmentsinAfghanistanandhasattachedgreatimportancetotheaffectofthecivilwarinthecountryontheregion.WaranddrugsinAfghanistanaredirectlylinkedtothespreadofthe"threeforces"inCentralAsiaandtocross-bordercrime.TheSCO'spositionontheAfghanissueisasfollows:ItrespectsthewilloftheAfghanpeopletosetupagovernmentthataccordswiththepeople'sowninterests;itsupportstheAfghangovernmentinrealizingeconomicdevelopmentwiththehelpoftheinternationalcommunityandpreservingpeaceandstabilityinthecountry;itstressestheimportanceofmaintainingtheleadingroleoftheUnitedNationsincoordinatinginternationalassistancetoAfghanistan;anditexpressesitscommitmenttoenhancecooperationwiththeAfghangovernmentoncombatingterrorism,illicitdrugstraffickingandorganizedcrime.
