Low Temperature Synthesis of Single-crystal Alpha Alumina Platelets by Calcining Bayerite and Potassium Sulfate

    摘要 Single-crystalalphaalumina(α-Al2O3)plateletsweresynthesizedbycalciningapowdermixtureofbayerite(α-Al(OH)3)andpotassiumsulfate(K2SO4)at900℃.ThecrystallinephaseevolutionsandmorphologiesofthesampleswerecharacterizedbyX-raydiffraction(XRD),scanningelectronmicroscopy(SEM),andtransmissionelectronmicroscopy(TEM).Thesynthesizedsamplesmainlyconsistedofsingle-crystalα-Al2O3plateletswithadiameterof0.5-1.5μmandathicknessof50-150nm.Moreover,with3,5,and8wt%(referredtotheobtainedalumina)α-Al2O3seedsaddingintothepowdermixtureofbayeriteandpotassiumsulfate,theaveragediameterofα-Al2O3plateletscanbereducedto450,240,and220nm,respectively.Itisfoundthatthesequenceofthephasetransformationisthebayerite(α-Al(OH)3)→boehmite(γ-AlOOH)→γ-Al2O3→α-Al2O3.FurtheranalysisindicatedthatK2SO4canpromotethephasetransformationfromγ-Al2O3toα-Al2O3andtheformationofsingle-crystalα-Al2O3plateletsmightbeattributedtotheliquidphaseK3Al(SO4)3.
